About Me
Known for his energetic presence, Kaden Selvidge (he/him) is pursuing two degrees at the University of Michigan while actively performing and auditioning across the state: B.A. Music (Voice); B.A. Communications & Media. He was introduced to musical theatre when a flyer for a community production of Beauty and the Beast was placed in his 4th grade cubby.
Kaden is passionate about developing his voice and artistry through focused training and vocal study, with an emphasis on healthy technique, expressive storytelling, and versatility across musical theatre styles. He highly values collaboration, authenticity, and continued growth as both a singer and performer.
Navigating a changing male voice is difficult...
I started singing at 4, theatre at 9, and had a lot of pride as a child soprano in middle school. Naturally that came to an end; it felt like every-time I got sick, my voice changed again-- and so did my range. I envied mature voices and replicated what professionals like Aaron Tveit, Gavin Creel, and Jeremy Jordan did on video as a way of teaching myself. I thought of range as the definitive aspect of singing; I became anxious, as achieving a vocal identity I was confident with was constantly altered by my voice changing. The truth is,
each person has their own individual instrument--
and what might work for Aaron or Gavin probably won't work for you and I. In fact, vocal pedagogues (the real deal researchers) constantly disagree with terminology and what determines healthy technique-- think terminology as simple as 'Chest Voice' vs. 'M1 register' (referred to as full voice). One can imagine the characteristics of these terms are nearly identical.
There are a plethora of vocal styles and genres; one would think the pedagogy would be further individualized, but with these disagreements, I ran into a few frequent problems I think you may relate with:
Any vocal instructor I had completely disagreed with my previous one; therefore, I frequently lost confidence that my singing was correct. It felt like starting over again.
Instead of explaining what literally is going on, vocal instructors overgeneralized and utilized the word 'placement' (red flag!!).
Singing consists of an initial sound being produced by the vocal cords vibrating, and then everything else shapes that initial sound.
I will help you find your pure, initial sound; I will teach you what is literally occurring, teach strategies and exercises to uphold vocal consistency, and we will strive further each lesson to truly make your instrument your own. I eagerly want to help those who may or may not face the same troubles I did on my vocal journey.
Currently, I am open to 30-minute and 60-minute lessons. 30-minute lessons will be $18, and 60-minute lessons will be $30. I give free 30-minute trial lessons, but I ask that the student comes prepared with a song from Musical Theatre or Disney. I am available in the following areas:
Oakland County (Rochester Hills, Troy, Royal Oak, Clawson, Farmington Hills, etc.)
Macomb County (Sterling Heights, Warren, Shelby Township, Clinton Township, etc.)
Starting June 30th, I will be in Ann-Arbor full-time taking a Spanish Intensive course until late-August. Therefore, I can only host Zoom lessons, or in-person in Ann Arbor.
Here is my Vocal Reel. I hope you enjoy!
